EUGENE, Ore. — A volunteer group dedicated to feeding the homeless in Lane County reached a major milestone Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, the Burrito Brigade served their one-hundred-thousandth burrito to someone in need.

It took them just three years to reach their goal, and they’re already looking forward to serving 100,000 more.

The Brigade’s kitchen is filled with more than a dozen volunteers who work to make hundreds of burritos to feed those in need.

“We head out on foot, on bike, or automobile and take food to the people.”

It’s a trip Jennifer Denson and the rest of the Burrito Brigade has made every weekend for the past three years.

“A hot burrito can really make someone’s day.”

The do it on Saturdays and Sundays because some social services are closed on the weekends, which means some on the street might not get a meal.

She says nearly a thousand people receive a burrito every weekend.

“It may have been someone down on their luck that day,” Denson says, “and we say, ‘Hey, do you want a hot burrito?’ And it totally made their day.”

Sunday afternoon they served their one-hundred-thousandth vegan meal, but Denson says they aren’t done yet.

“I just hope more people can do it. I hope more cities can get started and I just hope that it gets so much bigger.”

Denson says they are always looking for more help – volunteer work or donations.
